Born in Xi’an, China and raised in Auckland, Julie is a filmmaker and storyteller focused on championing marginalised stories. She has an Honours degree in Screen Production from the University of Auckland and was the 2016 Producer in Residence at Basement Theatre. She has since worked across a number of highly successful and sellout theatre productions. In 2017 she directed short documentary East Meets East for Loading Docs which has screened at festivals in London and New York. In 2019 Julie led the community arts kaupapa Project Pepeha which introduced te reo M?ori to Chinese and S?moan New Zealanders, taught in Mandarin and S?moan respectively, accompanied by a short online film that documented the process. Julie has also worked on drama short films and was the producer, co-director, and co-writer of short film Myth of The Model Minority for TVNZ OnDemand with a team of 14 writers and 42 actors. Julie was also part of the storyline and writing team for HEIHEI kids series Tales of Nai Nai and directed and hosted the podcast and video series Conversations With My Immigrant Parents for RNZ.
