Dance & Arts Therapy NZ is a creative therapy charity founded in 2010. Our kaupapa is to empower and support vulnerable communities through dance movement and arts therapy, with a particular focus on children and adults with special needs and disabilities, at-risk children from disadvantaged backgrounds and people of all ages struggling with sexual abuse-related trauma.
‘STARS Pakuranga’ is a dance movement therapy programme for children aged 6-8 who have Autism and other special needs. It runs weekly at Te Tuhi on Wednesdays from 3.45-4.30pm.
Each session is run by an expert Dance Movement Therapist, supported by two assistants. Session numbers are restricted to a maximum of 8 children to ensure every child gets adequate support.
‘STARS’ is a fun, creative and expressive space giving children the opportunity to develop essential social, sensory and movement skills, which can have a profound impact on their lives outside of the group. Benefits of the programme include improved self-confidence and wellbeing, increased creative self-expression and social skills, more participation at school or in the wider community, emotional development, increased ability to comfort themselves when upset, improved verbal and non-verbal communication and improved motor skills.
